WHAT
IS SENIORNET?
Our
Aims
SeniorNet is a non-profit organisation of computer-using
adults, aged 55 and older. SeniorNet's mission is to provide older
adults education for, and access to, computer technology to enhance
their lives and to enable them to share their knowledge and wisdom.
Beginnings
In the USA, SeniorNet grew out of
a research project funded by the Markle Foundation
in 1986 to determine if computers and telecommunications
could enhance the lives of older adults.
SeniorNet
began in New Zealand with the opening of the first
Learning Centre in Wellington in 1992.
Since
then our organisation has grown to many thousands
of members, with over 100 Learning Centres now spread
throughout New Zealand.

members learn and teach others to use computers and communications
technologies to accomplish a variety of tasks. They learn to desktop
publish anything from a newsletter to an autobiography, manage personal
and financial records, communicate with others across the country
and the world, and serve their communities. Members share a desire
to continue learning and a willingness to contribute their knowledge
to others.
Funding
SeniorNet is funded by membership dues, course fees,
and the generous sponsorship of many companies and foundations.
